Petty Officer 2/c, U.S. Navy Peacetime-Seaman Martinie was accidentally killed while on an approach to the Destroyer USS Barbey DE-1088} on 11-11-1988 as an Aviation Anti-Submarine Warfare Operator in his SH-2F Helicopter. Along with PO/2c Martinie, Lt. Comdr. Gerald Pelz, and Lt. Gerald Ramsdell. There was no recovery of the bodies.\r\n\r\nHe is the son of Mr. William A. & Mrs. Karen M. Martinie of Cherry Point, North Carolina, and Mrs. Martinie remarried to a Mr.Thomas C. Meisel of Peoria, and is a 1982 graduate of Dunlap H.S., and shortly after joined the Navy, and served until 1986, and went to Illinois Central College after his discharge. He reenlisted in the Navy for a second tour.\r\n\r\nSeaman Martinie was on TDY duty flying out of North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego, California.\r\n\r\nAwards: National Defense Service Medal, Navy Good Conduct Medal. \r\n \r\nBurial:\r\nBody lost at sea\r\nSpecifically: The Arabian Sea.
